From the Summit

My senior Capstone piece was inspired by the sublime in nature and the meditative feeling of being at the top of a mountain. I wanted the work to feel rhythmic but still slightly unpredictable through organic shapes and textures to capture the expansive view from the top of a summit. The contrast between the shiny satin and matte cotton fabrics create an added depth to the three dimensional undulating frames. There are a total of 12 layers of fabric sewn together with 230 diagonal lines. The lines were then slashed open and sewn to reveal the layers underneath. Quilt batting was added for extra dimension and tactility. The top layers of fabric were ice dyed and the frames built from wood.

The Last Breath

This piece is very personal to me. I was very close to my grandfather who passed from pulmonary fibrosis, a respiratory disease. This piece was inspired by his respiratory illness and the challenges he faced leading up to his last breath. The lung structure is made from woven fabric scraps and yarn knotted together and spray painted. They are joined in the middle with a tangled breathing tube that dangled down, disconnected from its oxygen tank. I wanted to capture the feeling of gasping for air and the toll that pulmonary fibrosis has on the body.

Ring and Vessel

This ring and it’s container were crafted inspired by the Sienna Duomo in Italy. I created 3D models to visualize the vessel. Different architectural features inspired the etchings on the sides and top of the box. The container was made using sheets of metal that were cut and soldered together. The ring was made using the wax cast technique.

Kindness is a Virtue

This painting was inspired by a collage I made of the word “kindness” It features different mark making techniques such as stamping and scraping.
